Symphony of the
Southwest
|
About the Symphony of the Southwest The Symphony of the Southwest has been a part of Valley cultural life for over 50 years. It was a community orchestra founded as the Sun Valley Orchestra in 1956 by music educators in the Mesa Public Schools. From the nucleus the Sun Valley Orchestra and its sponsoring group, the Mesa Fine Arts Association, were formed. Albert Shepard, of the Boston String Quartet, conducted the opening concert in 1958. The orchestra became the Mesa Symphony Orchestra Association in 1974. In 1981, the orchestra's first full-time conductor, Maurice Debonnet, was appointed, and in 1997 Gordon J. Johnson assumed the post of Music Director until 2005, followed by our current Music Director, Cal Stewart Kellogg. As it's name changes in 2007, the new Symphony of the Southwest has become one of the premier symphonic music providers in the Valley. The Symphony of the Southwest's history has been one rich in cultural growth as well as community support and educational outreach. Its main residence hall is the Mesa Arts Center Ikeda Theater; but, it also performs at various locations like the Higley Arts Center in Gilbert, the Chandler Center for the Arts, the Mesa Historical Museum and the West Valley Arts Museum. Under the baton of Music Director and Conductor Cal Stewart Kellogg, the orchestra is able to maintain and develop its commitment of artistic growth and the continuance of a tradition of community engagement. We wish to become an integral part of your life through quality music at the Mesa Arts Center and other at other locations. Quality music is an entertaining and exhilarating experience that we want to share with you and your family! Concerts at the Mesa Arts Center, Chamber Concerts, Healing Power of Music events, and performances at a variety of locations will give citizens more opportunities to connect with great music. The Youth Symphony of the Southwest and the Symphony of the South west Academy of Music will also continue to establish long term mentoring relationships with young musicians.
Please join us as the Symphony of the Southwest begins the new
season at the outstanding Mesa Arts Center! The 51st Concert
Season will focus on energizing concert programs that offers a safe
retreat from the hectic pace of daily life in the belief that you
deserve. Great Music for our Community! The Symphony of
the Southwest is supported by the Arizona Commission for the Arts
with funding from the State of Arizona and the National Endowment of the
Arts, together with a variety of other individuals and businesses.
We look forward to seeing you at the Mesa Arts Center and other venues
during the 2007-2008 Season! As a part of the commitment to music education, the Youth Symphony of the Southwest for young people age 15 to 20 will begin its second season this fall. The Symphony of the Southwest performs "Peter and the Wolf" for approximately 10,000 third and fourth graders each year, free of charge. Another component of the education program is music lessons, music theory, music history, ear training and music appreciation classes for people of all ages. Scholarships are offered to economically disadvantaged students who demonstrate interest and talent in music. In association with the Mesa Public Schools, the orchestra is establishing a referral process that will be utilized to identify potential scholarship recipients. The Youth Subscription Initiative (YSI) is an important part of the Symphony of the Southwest's educational and community engagement program. This was developed for young people to discover classical music, to create opportunities for family members to spend more time together, and create new symphony audiences. The Symphony of the Southwest strives to be a vital part of the community on all levels and collaborates with a number of other organizations across the Valley including the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, Mesa Community College choruses, the Mesa Public Schools, East Valley Children's Theater, various Boys & Girls Clubs and Southwest Shakespeare Company. Through our Community Tickets Partnership program, we are offering 1,000 free single tickets to our Concerts to school aged children and their companion, to financially challenged populations and to senior groups.
We offer you our deepest gratitude for all you have done to keep the
Music alive and this fine ensemble performing for you and others.
We could have never done it without you, and we hope for your continued
support and enthusiasm. In return, we'll give you a rich season of
diverse sounds and musical flavors. Come share with us a year of
music celebration that will launch our new name "Symphony of the
Southwest". Thank you. |
