       Consider How Music Can Improve
        A Child's Educational Experience

Studies have shown that exposure to and participation in music can improve children’s standardize test scores.  What’s more incorporation of music into a young person’s education imparts numerous skills that insure success in not just school but in life.

Music Education:

  • Helps children learn (do you remember learning your ABC’s in song?)

  • Helps children listen and concentrate

  • Helps children learn the value of practice and persistence

  • Helps children learn the power of cooperation and collaboration

Because the Symphony of the Southwest believes strongly in the value of music education, we sponsor a couple of very unique programs in the public schools.

We perform “Peter and the Wolf” to over 10,000 Mesa, Gilbert and Chandler 3rd and 4th graders at the Chandler Center for the Arts.  This program introduces the various instruments of the orchestra to the children during the critical year before they are given the opportunity to study an instrument at their schools.  This unique program gives them a first hand chance to see and hear the different instruments live, to help them make a decision as to which instrument they might like to play in school.

SYMPHONY OF THE SOUTHWEST
ACADEMY OF MUSIC

The Symphony of the Southwest Academy of Music is a division of the Symphony of the Southwest educational program which provides quality private lessons, music theory, music history, ear training, and music appreciation classes to people of all ages, backgrounds and economic levels.  Through the Symphony of the Southwest Scholarship program, scholarships will be offered to economically disadvantaged students who demonstrate interest and talent in music.  In association with the Mesa Public Schools, the Symphony of the Southwest is establishing a referral process that will be utilized to identify potential scholarship recipients.

The role of the Mesa Public Schools, through their music programs, is to identify and refer 25 to 50 talented and interested students who are financially challenged to the Symphony of the Southwest Academy of Music in order for them to be considered for a scholarship.  The selection of the recipients will be finalized through an audition which will evaluate the skills, talent, and potential of each applicant.  The judges for this audition process will be the Symphony of the Southwest Educational Committee members which consists of Mrs. Patricia Cosand, teacher at the Arizona Violin Studio, plays viola in the Symphony of the Southwest; Mrs. Cathy Worcester, teacher at the Arizona Violin Studio and Concertmaster of the Symphony of the Southwest;     and Mrs.   Sherry   Gordon,   private instructor.   Symphony of the Southwest Academy of Music teachers are selected through a process which evaluates their qualifications as well as their ability to work with all age groups safely.

The Vision of the Symphony of the Southwest is:
To be part of people's life through Great Music!

The Mission of the Symphony of the Southwest is:
To enrich the community through our quality musical performances and educational programs for people of all ages, backgrounds and economic levels.
The Symphony of the Southwest believes that:
Our musicians, sponsors, audience and community deserve the best quality entertainment.

  • Music has the power to transform lives and build a stronger community.

  • Music should be available to everyone to enjoy.

  • The pursuit of excellence pushes us beyond our expectations.

This new program generates great excitement in the community and the Symphony of the Southwest anticipate a demand for such scholarships directed toward the economically disadvantaged population.  As the Symphony of the Southwest would like to accomplish greater good during its 2007-2008 season, we are actively seeking funding in order to finance the Symphony of the Southwest Scholarship program.

Symphony of the Southwest
YOUTH SUBSCRIPTION INITIATIVE PROGRAM
Also known as (YSI)

The Youth Subscription Initiative (YSI) program was developed to 1) allow young people to discover classical music, 2) to create opportunities for family members to spend time together and 3) to create new audiences for symphonic music by making up to 1,000 free concert tickets available to schools, music educators and social agencies that will help us identify underserved and interested young people and help them discover their interest in symphonic music.  This concept of main streaming young people with a mostly adult audience is a radical departure from the traditional approach of staging young people's concerts as a separate entity.  Members of the Symphony of the Southwest will also provide orientation sessions, demonstrations, and master classes to support and enhance the subscription experience for those involved.

The two branches of the Scottsdale Boys & Girls Clubs, Lehi and Red Mountain, which serve the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian community was our first partner in this venture and received 50 subscriptions that will be distributed to 25 children paired with one parent each.  The Mesa Public Schools also take's part in this initiative and received 100 subscriptions to distribute to underserved children.

As a requirement, Symphony of the Southwest is requesting a commitment form to be signed for each subscription given to a child or parent through this program.  This commitment form will help us ensure the good use of our subscriptions.  Then, the detailed attendance report provided by the performing facility will serve as a good measurement of this program's success by indicating the number of people who attended each performance.

This program has generated great excitement in numerous community organizations and the Symphony of the Southwest anticipates a great demand for subscription donations that serve children and families.  With hopes to accomplish greater good during the 2007-2008' season, we are actively seeking funds to finance the (YSI) Youth Subscription Initiative program.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR YOUTH PROGRAMS,
A VISION FOR THE FUTURE!
